Covid 19 – Engineering Industry Impact
There is no shying away from the fact that the coronavirus pandemic will have a huge impact on the engineering sector. Currently there is lots of information out there that highlights the fears of mass redundancies. According to a recent article published by Dr Hilary Leevers “at the height of lockdown, 24% of businesses had paused or temporarily stopped trading. Whilst lockdown is easing in some areas, many workers and employers in the engineering industry have been negatively affected. For example, in April, 45% of businesses in construction saw at least a halving of their turnover with almost half of their staff furloughed in May.“
With the ever changing environment and need to act quickly many companies are finding themselves having to adapt and even create new products. A popular example for this being Formula 1 teams. When the government called on a range of non – medical manufacturing companies to increase ventilator supply the likes of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes all stepped up and helped to facilitate the production of ventilators. We have even seen cases where industries previously alien to each other have worked together during this time.
